My 1-year old is pad-trained, although we also go outside quite a bit.
I did exactly what are you doing -- xpen with pad on one side and bed on the other. The only problem I encountered was my pup shredding the pad when I left him alone. I started taking the pad away when he was alone and he never went potty when the pad wasn't there. He also won't do "big business" unless I am right there to take care of it immediately, which I appreciate!
Make sure Chanel always has easy access to her pad and she will likely do very well.
