All of my animals wear collars with their id tag attached. The id tag says :" I am Lost", with our telephone number. Even our indoor cats, who have never been outside in their whole lives, wear a collar for the reason being that if they were to ever get outside, someone would hopefully read the tag and phone. When my yorkie Maddy was just a puppy, not long after we got him, he was in the back yard playing. I had just let him out, and maybe five minutes later I received a telephone call from someone who said they had my Maddy. He had gotten under the gate, and had wondered a few door down. I shudder to think what could have happened to him if I hadn't have had that tag on him. I do not feel safe for them not to have their collars on! If their collars are adjusted properly, there shouldn't be a problem with them getting caught.
