One of my girlfriend just rescue a dachshund he was crate train, she said he is the best dog ever when it come to potty train, but she doesn't work.
I have use the crate at nite only when my girls were little and not potty train yet, in the day I will use the play pen cover with the pads, food water, bed etc, then little by little I will remove the pads until one left, but I don't work so it is easy to change the pads constantly, you might want to leave more pads for your fur baby, also if he destroy the pads some members here use the washable ones
