Yep! That's what I do. We live on 3 acres, unfenced, and I bought a retractable tie-out that goes out 19 feet. But I also have a 50 foot training leash that I attach to the tie-out, so it gives him 70 feet total to roam. It works for us and gives him more room than any fence I could build. The leash is light-weight too so you can't really feel it. Over at my dad's house, he has a fence and I must say it IS very convenient to be able to just let your dog out, and not worry. I will have a fence eventually but for now the tie-out method is working good.
