Scruffs is 7 lbs and he is the perfect size. Good for laps, but still can go on 1-2 hr walks, run around at the park, etc. I think a dog 6-8 lb range would be good. In my experience, the little ones (2-4 lb) I met were always timid. I can't imagine having a dog who is scared of everything.
Are you getting a puppy or adult dog? Maybe a retired show dog, or a dog they raised to like a year but decided not to show or something like that would be good. That way they are socialized already. Scruffs wasn't very socialized but I take him places a lot (pet stores, parks, dog parks) so I think that is what made him adjust. I think the majority of dogs out there will adjust to living with another dog, even if they bark at first (except super aggressive dogs). I don't know if that is true, but I've known a lot of dogs like that.
