I understand your reluctance in the antibiotics.....I've had antibiotics sent home with my girls after spay.....What I would do is ask him why? If his explanation is valid.....and based on his experience....then I would take his advice.
If nothing else, bring them home with you, just in case you may need them. Now the vet will administer an antiobiotic injection.
