If you get a Shar Pei, just make sure to take it to meet the Yorkie before you decide to keep the Yorkie. I've met unsocialized Yorkies who just bark at everything and Yorkies that want to play and run with all the dogs even if they are only 2 lbs!
I just got my first Yorkie back in July. I already had a Lab/Chow mix at home weighing in at about 65 lbs. I was concerned about the size difference mostly, however, my Yorkie plays with her all the time. In fact the little Duke (8 lbs) has taken over alpha roll and will run all over the house chasing and playing with the bigger dog. Duke will bark at other dogs from time to time, but he seemed to do well with our older dog.

I really think its all about how you raise them. Best of luck to you. I'm sorry to hear your other dog died.
