I am so sorry that you lost your husband.

A few years ago, I toured a facility for people with dementia. They allowed residents to bring in their pets (I saw a little Yorkie following one elderly woman around wherever she went). They also had a Weimaraner in the facility that "belonged" to all of the residents.

There was one wing of rooms that was for residents that had gotten so bad that they were bedridden and needed a high level of care. They were in their last stage of life but might be there months or even a year or more before they died. The people that worked there always knew when someone was getting ready to pass because the Weimaraner would go and lie next to their bed, sitting vigil, and wouldn't leave until they had died.

So, yes, many animals can sense death.
