Default Urgent - very long nail - How near the end is the quick

Toby had Legg Perthes so hasnt used his right leg much. He had the op to remove hip joint and is slowly starting to put weight back on leg. Because the foot hasnt touched the ground, the nails havent worn down and one is really long, longer than the pad of the toe. ie the nail will hit the ground before the pad does.

We have a layer of snow here, and TOby is using the leg well in the snow, so I think the nail might be causing him to hold the leg up now more than the hip op, because in the snow he can put the paw down and the nail can go on down into the snow.

So, long story short, what is the quickest way of getting this nail cut. Can I take a bit off every day, every few hours? how long does it take for the quick to retract.

The groomer got the quick the last time she did his nails and it hurt him for the whole day after so I dont want to hurt him again. He is already afraid of the clippers, and tries to nip when I come near his nail.
