I have had success with some of my dogs... not all of them

As for what is best over the years I have used many types of bells, jingle type, you see at Christmas, the ones with a dinger inside... right now I have a metal welcome sign hanging from the doorknob, I hear it hit the door...

!. Hang the bell, and ring it each time you go out...
2 Ring it with her nose or paw, each time you take her out.

Take her out every time the bell makes a sound (caused by her), let her know that the bell opens the door! If you are "not available... remove the bell... for the first month or so (like if you are away, or in the shower, etc...)

Depending on the dog, it doesn't take long!
