Default Bladder stones

Hi,
My sister's yorkie ultimately died recently at 9 years old of bladder stones. We had never heard of this before. She wants to know could they have been avoided? Is there something she did or did not do? He wasn't allowed people food ever. Only science diet food. Are they common in Yorkies? The breeder was horrible from the beginning. She was charged a teacup price and he was 9 lbs. He had hip dysplasia at a young age and had to go through surgery. So could it have been a defect from the wrong breeding? She doesn't want to get another and make the same exact mistakes and end up broken hearted again? Can anyone help??? Any and all advice, guesses, etc. are welcomed. She doesn't want to go through it again.
