In my experience, a crate in the back seat is the safest place for your little one. They even make crates that have a build in slot of the the seat belt.

Unfortunately, I have seen a few horrible accidents that will stay with me forever...both involved unrestrained dogs and neither survived. After that I will never let my dogs travel in a car without being in a crate.

Another thing about the booster seats and harnesses is they are a little misleading about their safety. In the event of airbag deployment the dog is left unprotected and could be killed or seriously injured.
