I know in humans your natural flora has to be disturbed by something before other bacteria (C.Diff is the bad strain in humans) can colonize the intestines and cause diarrhea. Alot of people in hospitals get it from being on multiple antibiotics or really high doses of antibiotics. I assume it would be similar in dogs.

Maybe if something else had already irritated her colon lately and she was exposed to this bacteria it took over?

Sorry, I have no experience with this in dogs... just people.

With humans if the diarrhea is really bad we treat with a couple antibiotics and encourage reintroduction of normal flora through consuming yogurt with live colonies or taking in probiotics.
