We just went through the same thing with a jealous 3 year old Westie and a new female yorkie puppy. Lucy has been here for now . .3 months . . and things are much better than at the beginning.
One thing to remember is that your five year old is not in constant 'play mode' as your puppy is. Give her a private space where she can get away from the puppy's antics if necessary. Lucy drives my Westie crazy by constantly crawling all over his head; all over his body . . anything to get his attention and to play. Sometimes he does; sometimes he doesn't. When he doesn't - he can climb up on his high stool or couch where she can't get to him.
We had out and out fights . . so if you are not having that .. then I think you have a good chance of blending into a harmonious family.
You are doing the right thing by doing EVERYTHING FIRST for your older dog. Lavish attention on your oldest and that will lessen the jealousy. It's hard because puppies are so needy . . but it can be done.
Sounds like you are on the right track! Have patience and let us know how things progress. |
