It could be a tapeworm --- OTC dewormers usually don't take of tapeworm. Take a stool sample to your vet, and they can fix you right up.
Once a dog is treated for tapeworm (shot or pills) the worm is usually digested so that you never see it in the poop. A live, untreated worm will shed segments that look like grains of rice, and you will sometimes see them wiggling around in fresh poop.
Don't worry, just bring in your pup and it is an easy fix with no side effects.
If it is tapeworm, they get it from ingesting an infected flea, so be sure that you don't have a flea problem and get your pup started on flea preventative.
