If you are going to be changing out his food, you might want to look at the brands that formulate for "all life stages." That way, you can feed your adult and puppy the same thing.

I waited 'till Apple was 11 months old to switch her to raw (from Innova)...But after seeing all the wonderful improvements, because of the raw, I started my little boy on it at 4 months (when I got him)...He's doing fantastic, as is Apple...But feeding is such a personal choice that you, as the mama, have to feel good about too
