Check with you vet on the how soon after a heat it is okay to spay her. Working with rescue I've had numerous dogs spayed and most all of them, by that evening were doing just fine. Of course, they are not up to running around (and shouldn't be allowed anyway) but for the most part the recovery time is fast.

Be certain to ask your vet questions ahead of time, about pre-op bloodwork, type of anesthetic used and after surgery care.
