Crate training is the best way to go as they will not pee or poop where they eat and sleep. Put their food and water bowl as well as their bed in there, and make sure that you're taking him out every 2-3 hours to potty. Keep an eye especially right after he eats and drinks (and put him on a food schedule to make it easier for you and him, this also trains him how to potty), when he starts to sniff around and turn in circles it's time to go out! Make sure you're using the same words outside like "go potty" or "go pee" over and over so that he associates that with what you're trying to teach him. Try hanging a bell on your front door and make sure you ring it and say your "choice phrase" every time you take him out, and eventually he'll remember to do it himself and let you know when he needs to go!
