Alot of perfect timing! We use puppy pads seeing as it isn't possible for us to go outside everyday because of weather and other issues. Anyways we have just been having to catch him in the act of sniffing around (usually he would be playing and all of a sudden drop his toy and start sniffing) or he was actually about to poop or pee and we caught him and put him in his crate and let him out once he was done.

He finally associated peeing/pooping on puppy pad to being let out of the crate and now he is out all of the time and goes right back to his crate to use the puppy pad.
