Ruby was spayed at 13 months, and just under 3 lbs. with absolutely no complications.
I'm sure hearing of a yorkie that didn't make it through surgery has got to be disconcerting, but remember many thousands (millions?) of small dogs have done just fine.
Make certain you trust your vet, and get the necessary pre-op bloodwork.
