I've used the same method for barking, and it works like a charm. This is the method our trainer taught us to use. At this point, if there is unwanted barking going on, all I have to do is say our "key word" (initially used while squirting) and the barking stops, no water squirting is necessary anymore. Also, I should add, we never sprayed in the face, always towards the bottom of their legs.

None of mine are afraid of water. They know the difference between water at bath time, play time and the "No, No" squirt of water.
