When the girls are in heat my boy will get a little over the top and he has gotten his nail ripped. It was very close to the base as they were not long and we had to take him into the vet because he was in pain and blood was all over. There is a vein in there and they were worried about it so they just clipped it super short, gave pain meds, antibiotic (feet can have dirt on them and could enter the wound) and wrapped the foot. Your guy doesnt sound like it's that bad though. The moment Gizmo's was clipped he felt much better and it didnt hurt at all so perhaps his just broke off all the way.
