Yes I have most dogs don't like water sprayed into their face - I would use another method.
How old is your pup? Have you tried the firm no's? Also you can try yelping and saying ouch and whimpering like a puppy would do if it got bit too hard in play. Never reward the behaviour if you are petting the dog stop, if the dog is on your lap put him/her down on the floor.
