I only use the top knot for special occasions and when we go out if I want a bow in. Other than that I use some snap barettes that I got from Walmart. They are the goody brand and I just put her hair up using one or two. She can get them out, but not as easily as a topknot. If you are worried about losing hair, I'd suggest those for everyday. I put them in when I get home at 3:30 and she will wear them until bedtime. Sometimes I don't use them, though, and her hair just hangs in her eyes all messy.
