Somewhere along the line, I was told to "growl" OUT. Practice: sharp, short. If you do it right, it sounds just like the sound Mom would make if she was displeased. When I've done it in the past, things get dropped like a hot potato, especially in pups that have just left "home". Repeated over time, they never forget.
If he's biting YOU, he'll stop. He may even stop if he's chewing other "stuff". But always have the substitute ready, too.
