My male had a retained testicle so his neuter was similar. It is considered a lot more invasive when they have to go up and find the testicle.
He had some redness and a bit of swelling (the hard bumpy thing, very similar to my females spay incision) for a couple weeks after the neuter, but it kept getting less and less, never worse. I used neosporin on his incision. If you suspect infection, then maybe bring him in. I didn't cover him with anything, I would be careful about that unless you can't watch him and keep him from licking. If you do cover him, use something that won't irritate the sutures.
