It's not that they are not good, it's just that in the four years of vet school, they learn about farm animal medicine, dogs and cats, birds, other small animals. Not much time to learn everything about everything. After they graduate, then starts the lifetime of learning. At least if your vet looks it up in a book, at least he is admitting that he doesn't know it all and is humble enough to at least read a book, instead of giving you the wrong answer.
My own family doc looks in the book all the time and I'd much rather he did that then making a mistake. My daughter just went through medical school and I know the amount of books she had to read, no one can ever be expected to remember everything.
