If you do it enough they will understand voice commands. First do hand signals along with voice commands. When first teaching a new trick, they follow your hand (with treat), so they learn to look at the hand. Once they have done it many many times, they will get the vocal command as well.

We are doing no hand signals at all now with Uni. There are just a few she won't do without hand signals.
