I currently only have two, but could see myself adding a third at some point.

My parents also have two dogs and I visit them quite often, so when I am there... we have four dogs (and 2 cats)... it really is not that difficult.

The money is obviously a concern, vets, groomers, etc.

However, I think it is a misconception that people who have multiple dogs can never go on vacation or leave their homes... by having four we are able to feel less guilty when we leave because they are all together and have plenty of other pups to play with. If only one of us goes away, the other watches all four and all is good. If we all go away, we have a great lady who comes to the home and watches the pets... they are all here together and are always fine when we get home.

We have taken all four of them away with us numerous times, they all even went on a 12 hour car trip, they all slept quietly and were very well behaved in the hotel room, they didnt bark or make any noise at all, this all has to do with training... yes you cant pick 4 dogs up and tell them to be quiet but you can train them to sit and be quiet all by themselves.

Obviously multiple dogs means a lot more work in the training department but if you can handle the training... you can have a whole group of well behaved, happy, well traveled, little furbutts and have a life of your own
