Instead of cold wash cloth, use a warm cloth. Ruby had an abscess on her neck (brought on from a blood draw). It continued to grow under her skin, until I used warm wash cloth compresses (suggested by the vet). After the warm compresses, the abscess opened up and drained....it was a huge hole by then. I had to keep the wound bandaged, cleaning it daily for it seemed like weeks. It finally did close up, and now she has just a small scarred place that doesn't grow hair much.
Anyway, the warm compresses might give him some relief for now.
