Don't have any advice on the traveling part, but as far as the benedryl our vet has me give Motley a very small dose every day to help with his allergies. I don't always get it to him everyday but when they get a little worse I will give him the dose and we have had no adverse reaction. One thing is though I don't really notice it making him calm or sleepy, he's on fast forward alllll day
