I work at a pet groomer and for the dogs who actually will ALLOW us to grind the nails, we use one hand to hold the nails out (fingers on top of toes and thumb underneath to hold the toe steady we are working on at the time) but also we adjust the hair so we are holding the hair back under our fingers while we are grinding. Hair under the paws should be clipped or scissored off so there shouldn't be hair there to worry about.

With the other hand u hold the grinder and use your thumb to help steady also on that hand.

It's not easier in my opinion unless you are lucky to have a dog who doesn't mind it. The outcome of the grinded nails though is less sharp when they wanna put their paws on your skin. Clipped nails tend to be very sharp and scratch easily. With grinding them this also does a filing effect.

The biggest plus on grinding over clipping though is that it is a lot easier to see when you are coming up on the quick as opposed to the clipper where wherever you clip is where it's done permanently. With a grinder it's not slow but you are coming up to the quick instead of cutting right into it if that makes any sense.
