Whatever it is, Benadryl shouldn't hurt. It may not help either though.
I've heard of the dye free, whatever flavor something or other, etc., etc., etc., but I just use the red (cherry I think). As long as it doesn't contain xylitol (and it hasn't so far that I have noticed), then it should be fine.
Mites are detected by a skin scraping and if they are suspected, but the test is negative, sometimes treatment is done anyway. You can't diagnose or treat them without the vet. There are many other things it could be though.
