Well, you need to have some on hand. One of my females would not eat 1/2 day or so before labor--I would give it to her during and in the day that followed. Generally though, moms will eat 2-3x their normal amount though right after whelping--so long as they are eating well, you don't need to give it to them. It's good to have on hand for pups when they are being weaned too.
