I would go BUT--from the sound of things, I probably would not like what they did. Sounds like they did not maintain the integrity of the original house.
My husband and I bought an old house with wall to wall carpet, wallpaper EVERYWHERE (much of it water-damaged), and ugly '70s fixtures. The previous owner had even carpeted the kitchen with those adhesive carpet squares. It was hideous, but the house was solid.
We restored the wood floors, stripped wallpaper and painted the plaster walls, and put in nice fixtures in the bathrooms (no more pink toilet!). Eventually we gutted the kitchen, and had new shaker-style cabinets, oak flooring, appliances (the ones that came with the house were harvest gold), and lovely granite counters.
THe old lady who sold the house stopped by one day. I showed her all we had done. She was polite, but I could tell she HATED IT!
There's just no accounting for taste.
