I think one of the problems is that you are trying to groom him while he is on your lap. Dogs usually behave better if they are up on something like a grooming table. A folded towel on a washing machine works great, too.

Don't make grooming time a battle. Put him up on your washing machine and brush him a little with a nice soft brush like a Madan. Praise him while you are doing it and reward him with little treats as you go. When he's had enough, stop. You want it to be a positive experience, not a battle of wills. You should be able to gradually increase the time this way.
