The momma should not be totally confined to a pen with she pups. She needs to be able to get away from them when necessary. I always have a board across the front of the x-pen so mom can go in and out. Your pups will still need to nurse during the night. I don't know how far your bedroom is from your living room but you and momma need to sleep within hearing distance of the pups. I always keep my pups in the spare bedroom that is right next to our bedroom so it is easy for me to hear them. My moms usually don't feel comfortable sleeping in a different room than where the pups are until the pups are about 8 weeks or older. Also, if you have other dogs in the house you have to make sure they do not have access to the pups unless you are 100 percent sure it is safe.
