I don't think it's sad - crate training is a great method. If you do a search for crate training here on YorkieTalk you'll find a lot of information about its benefits. That said, some do disagree with it. I'm no expert, so I won't tell you what you should think, but look into it and you'll see that many loving dog owners have very happy pups who love their crates.
