When I inquired about Meg's spay at the vet, they told me she had to stay overnight in order to have blood work processed. Basically, they were going to draw blood on teh first day, run the tests, then do surgery the next day. When I told them that I wanted to have a full blood panel done, they said that I should actually come in with her one week ahead of time for the blood work. Then I would drop her off in teh morning and pick her up in teh afternoon, so she wouldn't have to stay overnight.

Maybe you can ask your vet about doing something similar?
