As has been said many times, there are good and bad breeders in both worlds, but as a general rule of thumb, breeder/exhibitors do actually do more testing and yes, they do breed for the best in conformation, but, it would be pointless to produce a perfectly structured Yorkie, with major health issues. You mentioned "hobby breeder" breed for health because they want the return business and you speak of reputation. It's not as if word is spread that widely on some little home breeder.. Whos's gonna spread the word, where are they going to spread it? Yes, possibly on forums such as YT but when you get right down to it...it's insignificant. As vast as the show world is, it's also much like a small town..Word spreads quickly unfortunately not always down to the unknowing public, but it does spread. While reputable breeder / exhibitors do not sit ring side discussing the breeding practice of other exhibitors, of course it is discussed privately and when someone ask for a recommendation, they simply refer the person to another breeder whom they know practices good responsible breeding. Anyone who actually knows anything about those "dog show people", know what the truth is and to those that don't know, it would be well worth their time to find more before trying to critize. No, show breeders can't and won't produce enough puppies forall the loving homes that want a Yorkie. That's not what they are about. There will always be a place for reputable home, hobby breeders that breed to standard and for health... it's just finding one out of the multitude of not so good, back yard breeders, puppy millers and brokers out there. That's a problem. JMO |
I absolutely agree with you and it is all about the ethics of the breeder but how is one suppose to figure out who these breeders are?
You can go to 10,000 websites and they are say they love their dogs, raised in the home, yada yada yada. How many times have we heard they were so nice and knowledgeable about the breed and we all know they have learned to "sell" their dogs without any concern for their dogs. We have all learned to look for the red flags but people still will buy from these people. We also know some show breeders could care less about their dogs but are winning ribbons. The dog breeding/showing world is very complex as nothing is black and white as is the AKC.
I know that dogs should not be an impulse buy (they usually are) so how do we educate people to what is going on in the background. We say it over and over here on YT but people still won't listen and dogs suffer because of it.
Maybe we should start a thread on what to look for in a reputable breeder and also what to be aware of.
Thoughts?
