Default do they go through growth spurts?

One of my dogs just turned a year this month, my other one will be 2 in May. I feed them twice a day but lately they have been eating so much I had to turn to free feeding. I put their food down and they inhale it, I put more down and they inhale it. I know they aren't starving or anything and even when I fed twice a day I always made sure there was a little something in the bowls (not a whole feeding size but a handful of bits for them). Also my DH is horrible with snacks and loves to give them treats in the morning before he goes to work. they are both small 4.5 lbs and almost 7 lbs. but they are very healthy!
Last night I swear they ate 3 1/2 times what they normally eat for dinner. Do they go through growth spurts, could it be the cold and they are trying to fatten themselves up for the winter (mind you I live in AZ and this is the first time its been really cold).
