As stated in the link posted earlier, I think it depends on what type of coat your baby has (wooly, cotton, silky). So basically it may all come down to genetics, not the size of your yorkie. Is your baby's fur/hair seem wiry or more like human hair? I've attached a picture of my Rio - she's 9 months, and she's tiny too (3.0 lbs). I haven't cut her hair at all, except for her ears, paws, and tush. I think her hair is the silky type which seems to grow quite easily.
