The best time is when they are good and hungry! I trained Uni with plain kibble only. She didnt even know what a treat was until she was well over a year old! Check out my profile page, there is a vid of her doing like 15 or so tricks.

Work on one trick at a time. When they have got it about 75% of the time, move on to the next one. But do the whole routine and do them in order they learned it. After they got it 100% of the time, then mix up the routine.
