I don't advise a pin brush for a puppy. A good combination brush such as a Isnis brush. Spray puppy coat with a good conditioner, never brush a dry coat. If you encounter a mat, place your fingers between the mat and the skin and use a small slicker brush to work it out. Always look for a quiet time to brush your pup. It should be fun. Most pups don't take to grooming readily, it takes time and patience..
