I think there is not even one reason NOT to chip your baby. the vet can do it anytime, they do not need to be under, but yes, it is quite a large needle. Uni came from the breeder with her chipped already, so I didn't have to pay for the chipping, but I did have to pay to register it. Her chip is Avid, and the registry service we have is Home Again. You can upload a picture, enter in description, and of course, your contact info. Registration is $17 (what I paid, may be more now) for the life of the pet. You can upgrade to $14.95 a year (I think if I remember correctly) and get some extras, but I didn't do that.

One thing that I remember hearing on the news, if/when you do get your baby chipped, don't put that info on the tags, or don't buy a tag from Home Again. Some thieves, if they KNOW your baby had a chip, they will dig them out! So there's no way of IDing them.
