Here in certain areas of Michigan the shelters are seeing more than the usual number of dogs that are turned in because the owners have become homeless or they just can't afford to feed themselves and a dog. Also, certain breeds seem to be targeted for theft. I've seen ads for Yorkies asking as much as $3500. Some people will do anything for money.
