Leaving him with your parents will be much less traumatic than losing his Mommy AND going to a new home all at once. He will feel abandoned. At least he is at home at your parent's home and has his smells and everything he knows there. DO NOT PLACE HIM IN A NEW HOME IF YOU CAN AVOID IT!!
I had to leave my dog (many, many years ago) for one year. And did not see her for that full school year. At first she was sad and then she adjusted. When I came home she was wild with excitement. Life was fine when it was all said and done.
