We made the trip from East Tennessee to Northern Maine last year and from East TN to Denver this year. We had no trouble finding pet friendly hotels. We have found most Holiday Inns and Best Westerns are pet friendly. Maddie is a larger Yorkie so she would be a bit harder to sneak in and I guess the old conscience works on me about going against policy.
