Since beneful is chock full of grains and fillers, have you tried adding in some plain protein to his food? Poached/grilled/baked chicken would be good, so would lean beef, turkey, (any meat that had very little fat to upset his system.) You could also try some cottage cheese (never tired that myself but many people use it.)

Does anyone happen to actually know why you can't do nutri-cal everyday from a vet standpoint? I've always had it recommended to me by a vet because it was produced to be a high calorie supplement for dogs who aren't consuming enough - that the issue with feeding too much of it when it wasn't needed was that it would obviously cause weight gain. If he's not eating enough to make him gain weight that he needs, I don't really see why some on a daily basis can't be useful until he gains the needed weight.

My dog has been sick and has lost a lot of weight. Should I feed him something special?
Stressed or debilitated animals, those recovering from illness, surgery or whelping, aging animals or just plain picky eaters can all benefit from Nutri-Cal.

It's not a vitamin supplement but that's not what you're feeding it for right? You just want the weight gain benefits?
