I talked to a friend that's a groomer and part of the rescue network around here. She had the same advice, go door to door with your husband as whatever you want to be, a church representative, looking for a stolen car, anything but looking for a stolen dog. Her and her husband did that looking for a stolen shih tzu. Once they suspected a house(barking dogs, smell, etc. then she said--
"If they actually know where the dog is or really have some type of possible house. Call in the police. that is what happened with this other dog. the owner of the dog went in with a police officer. they posed as husband and wife and they were going to buy a dog. My clients got their dog back and the people got busted."
This means there would have to be a solicitation for a dog for sale, but it worked in their case.
